Pop-up Urban Intervention

Student Design Competition

This semester the year-three students of the School of Architecture of the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) enrolled in the studio Build’ were asked to design a pop-up urban intervention to reactivate abandoned/residual areas of Hong Kong with the aim to encourage social interaction within the community. For two weeks, as a part of the course assignments, 16 teams of students conceived a temporary urban prototype that was intended to be low-cost and replicable across the open spaces of the city that have similar urban conditions. The projects, evaluated by a team of academic and professional experts in the field of architecture, urban design, and urban planning, were judged based on the following criteria:

Creativity – Originality of the idea and approach
Buildability – Capacity of the intervention to be easily built and installed
Replicability – Capacity of the intervention to be replicable across the city
Sociability – Capacity of the intervention to stimulate social engagement
